How the number is worked out

The formula

Each metric computed from the raw figures, then the better value marked

Runs per dismissal, so innings minus not outs.

Runs conceded per wicket. Lower is better.

Three of the bowling measures are better when lower, which is why the leading column is not always the larger number.

A worked example: a batter against an all rounder

Player A has 4200 runs from 120 innings with 14 not outs. Player B has 3800 from 110 with 8 not outs, and 140 wickets.

A is the better batter by a small margin. B is a different kind of cricketer, and the table shows that rather than trying to reduce it to one number.

Rules and edge cases

The situations that change the answer, and the ones most calculators get wrong.

Lower is better for three of the five bowling measures

Bowling average, bowling strike rate and economy all reward smaller numbers. The leader column accounts for this, but it is worth saying plainly because a table that marks the larger figure would be wrong three times out of five.

Career figures compare eras as much as players

Pitches, bats, fielding restrictions and the standard of opposition have all changed. Two averages twenty years apart are not measuring quite the same thing, and no comparison tool can correct for that.

Format matters more than most comparisons admit

A Twenty20 strike rate against a multi day one is not a comparison at all. Compare like with like, and if the two players' careers are weighted towards different formats, say so rather than reading the table as a verdict.

This is a starting point for an argument, not a settlement of one

Numbers do not capture the situations a player scored in, the bowling faced, or what the side needed at the time. The table is a way of framing the discussion rather than ending it.
