How the number is worked out
The formula
Batting average = runs / (innings - not outs)- runs
- Total runs scored across the period.
- innings
- Innings in which the batter came to the crease.
- not outs
- Innings that ended without the batter being dismissed. Subtracted from the divisor, never counted as a dismissal.
The divisor is dismissals, not innings. This is the difference between a correct average and a common wrong one.
A batter who has never been dismissed has no average at all. A scorecard prints a dash rather than a number.
A worked example: why not outs matter
A middle order batter has 400 runs from 12 innings, four of which ended not out.
Batting at six or seven, not outs pile up quickly, and they change the average considerably.

The average is 50.00, not 33.33. That gap is the entire reason the rule exists, and it is why lower order batters often average more than their scores suggest.
Rules and edge cases
The situations that change the answer, and the ones most calculators get wrong.
Divide by dismissals, not by innings
An average measures how many runs a batter makes before getting out. An innings that ended not out did not end in a dismissal, so it does not belong in the divisor. Dividing by innings understates every batter who finishes innings unbeaten, which mostly means the lower order.
Never dismissed means no average
With no dismissals there is nothing to divide by, so the average is undefined rather than infinite or equal to the run total. Scorecards print a dash. This calculator says so rather than showing a misleading number.
Retired hurt is usually not a dismissal
A batter who retires hurt and does not return is normally recorded as not out, so it does not count as a dismissal. Retired out is different and does count. Competitions vary, so check your scoring regulations.
Not outs can flatter a tail ender
A number ten who is unbeaten on 8 in half his innings can carry an average well above what his scores suggest. The average is doing exactly what it is designed to do, but it is worth reading alongside the runs and the innings rather than on its own.
A duck only counts if you were out
Nought not out is not a duck and does not affect the average at all, because there is no dismissal. Nought out drops the average sharply, because it adds a dismissal without adding runs.
