The formula
Projection = runs + (current rate x acceleration x overs remaining)- current rate
- Runs scored divided by overs faced, so far.

- A multiplier applied to the current rate for the overs still to come. 1.0 is flat, 1.4 assumes the rate lifts by forty per cent.

- Total overs minus overs bowled.
A worked example: at the thirty over mark
A side is 142 for 3 after 30 overs of a 50 over innings, with a settled pair in.
A flat projection reads low here, because almost every side scores faster in the last ten.

The flat projection is 237 and the accelerated one is 275. The truth is usually nearer the second, which is why a flat projection is best read as a floor rather than a forecast.
Rules and edge cases
The situations that change the answer, and the ones most calculators get wrong.
A flat projection is a floor, not a forecast
Assuming the rest of the innings goes at exactly the current rate ignores the single most reliable pattern in limited overs cricket, which is that sides accelerate at the death. Treat the flat number as what happens if nothing changes, and nothing usually does not.
Wickets in hand drive the acceleration, not the clock
A side 142 for 3 can double its rate in the last ten. A side 142 for 8 cannot, because there is nobody left to take the risk. The multiplier here is a setting rather than a calculation for exactly that reason: only you know how many wickets are standing.
Projections are least reliable early
At ten overs the sample is small and the field is up, so the current rate reflects a powerplay that is about to end. Projections start to mean something around the halfway mark and get steadily better after that.
This is a projection, not a prediction
It extends the arithmetic of what has already happened. It knows nothing about who is batting, the pitch, the bowling left or the conditions. Read it as a way of framing the situation rather than as a forecast of the total.
