How this was worked out

How the number is worked out

The formula

The strike rate off non boundary balls is the more revealing figure: it tells you how well the batter turned the strike over between the big shots.

A worked example: a Twenty20 innings

A batter makes 74 from 52 balls, with 8 fours and 3 sixes.

Two thirds of the innings came in boundaries, with one every 4.7 balls. The strike rate of 58.5 off everything else says the strike was not rotated well, which is the thing to work on rather than the boundary count.

The number that matters is the one off the other balls

A high boundary percentage is often read as a compliment. It can equally mean a batter who scores only in boundaries and blocks the rest, which puts pressure on the other end. The strike rate off non boundary balls is the figure that separates the two.

Boundary runs are not the same as boundaries hit

Three sixes and eight fours is eleven boundaries and fifty runs. Sides that hit more sixes get a higher percentage from fewer scoring shots, which is why the balls per boundary figure is shown alongside.

Overthrows and all run fours do not count

A four is only a boundary if the ball reached the rope. Four runs taken by running, or four from overthrows, count towards the total but not towards the boundary count. Scorecards record these separately for exactly this reason.

Format changes what normal looks like

Around 50 to 60 per cent is ordinary in Twenty20, where the field is spread and boundaries are the main scoring source. In a one day innings 40 per cent is more typical, and in multi day cricket lower again.
