Zimbabwe's Mukuhlani Appointed ICC Deputy Chair Until November 2027

Tavengwa Mukuhlani has been appointed ICC Deputy Chair until November 2027. The International Cricket Council confirmed it on Thursday. Mukuhlani chairs Zimbabwe Cricket. He sits on the ICC Board as his country's representative. He succeeds Imran Khwaja, and is the first Zimbabwean to hold the office.
The timing is the part worth marking. Zimbabwe co-hosts the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 with South Africa and Namibia. That tournament falls inside Mukuhlani's term. An administrator from a host board will occupy the ICC's second-ranking office while his own board stages a World Cup.
Committee seats already held
He did not arrive from outside the machinery. Three ICC committee roles were already his before Thursday.
- ICC Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee, member
- Nominations Committee, member
- HR and Remuneration Committee, chair
Between them those three touch the ICC's money, its senior appointments and its pay structures. The Zimbabwe Cricket chairmanship stays with him too. Few directors hold that spread of portfolios at once.
A term that runs through the 2027 World Cup
The deputy chairmanship expires in November 2027. The World Cup is scheduled from 4 October to 21 November 2027. The overlap is near total. Mukuhlani holds the office for essentially the whole tournament, from opening match to final.
Africa last staged a men's World Cup in 2003. South Africa and Zimbabwe shared it then. The 2027 edition makes that a second joint staging for the pair, 24 years on. Namibia comes in as a first-time host.
Namibia's inclusion is the other marker. A first-time host joins two established ones. The 2027 tournament therefore spreads across three boards of markedly different size and budget.
Shah's statement
ICC Chairman Jay Shah welcomed the appointment. "I warmly congratulate Tavengwa Mukuhlani on his appointment as Deputy Chair," he said. Shah pointed to Mukuhlani's understanding of the global game and his commitment to its development. The Tribune reported Shah calling the outcome a significant milestone for Zimbabwe.
Mukuhlani's reply leaned on the directors who chose him. "I am deeply honoured by the confidence placed in me by my fellow ICC Board Directors," he said. He added that Shah's leadership, energy and ambition have brought a clear sense of purpose to the ICC.
Khwaja hands over
Imran Khwaja vacates the post. The appointment was made by the ICC Board itself, as ESPNcricinfo reported in naming the board as the deciding body. The ICC release set out no handover timetable. It named the end date of the new term and little else on process.
For associations, venues and domestic bodies, the practical change is narrow. The deputy chair sits across ICC spending and senior hiring. Until November 2027 that seat belongs to a Zimbabwean administrator, across the same window in which Zimbabwe is a World Cup host.
