Trent Boult Signs With Sydney Thunder As SA20 Dates Overlap

Trent Boult has signed a one year deal with Sydney Thunder. It covers the whole of the Big Bash League 2026-27 season, finals included. The left arm seamer joins fellow New Zealander Lockie Ferguson. That hands head coach Andrew Flintoff a left and right new ball pairing. Boult has played one BBL season before. It was for Melbourne Stars in 2022-23.
Flintoff was direct about the reason. "One of the things we haven’t been able to do in recent times is take wickets with the new ball," he said. The record backs him up. Geo Super reported that Thunder finished bottom of the BBL standings in 2023-24 and again in 2025-26.
One year, finals included
The contract runs across the full league phase and the finals series. Thunder start on 16 December. The opponents are Adelaide Strikers, at Manuka Oval in Canberra. Their first home match follows three days later against Sydney Sixers. The finals series begins on 19 January. The Australia Day final is on 26 January.
- 12 December: BBL 16 opens, Melbourne Renegades v Perth Scorchers, MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
- 16 December: Thunder’s first match, v Adelaide Strikers, Manuka Oval, Canberra
- 19 December: Thunder’s first home match, v Sydney Sixers
- 19 January: BBL finals series begins
- 26 January: Australia Day final
The ETPL form behind the deal
Boult arrives off the inaugural European T20 Premier League. He took 16 wickets there at an economy rate of 6.63. His club was Edinburgh Castle Rockers. They won the tournament and he finished second on its wicket list. Best figures: 5 for 24 against Glasgow Cosmic.
"Cricket has given me so much over the years, and I’m still at the stage where I love going out there," Boult said in a Thunder release. On the move itself he was shorter. "I’m really excited to be playing in the Big Bash again and joining Lockie at Thunder." Flintoff returned the compliment. "Trent has an amazing reputation for being a great bloke, a team player and a world-class performer," the Thunder coach said.
January and the SA20 overlap
The back end of the window is tight. Geo Super reported that Boult is expected to play for MI Cape Town in the SA20. That campaign begins on 20 January. The South African league itself starts on 17 January. The BBL finals series runs over the same fortnight. Geo Super noted the Thunder deal could clash with those SA20 commitments.

BBL 16 opens in Chennai
The season begins outside Australia for the first time. Cricket Australia has confirmed Melbourne Renegades against Perth Scorchers on 12 December. The venue is the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s general manager of Big Bash Leagues, said the aim is "to fill the stadium" and to make the night "a true BBL experience". He also said he expects the match to be "the most-watched game in Australian domestic league history for any sport". Thunder are not in that fixture.
