Sourav Ganguly Moves From Director To Delhi Capitals Head Coach

Sourav Ganguly is the Delhi Capitals head coach for IPL 2027. The franchise confirmed it on Tuesday. He replaces Hemang Badani, who held the job from 2024. It is Ganguly's first head coaching role in the IPL.

"Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart," the 54-year-old said. He added that he was looking forward to building "a strong and fearless team".

Chairman Parth Jindal called him "one of the greatest Indian captains and administrators", now stepping into coaching. Jindal said the club intends to challenge for the IPL title.

Seven years at the franchise

Ganguly did not arrive cold. He joined Delhi as an advisor in 2019 and the side reached the playoffs that season. He then served as BCCI president between 2019 and 2022. He returned to the club in January 2023 as director of cricket, covering the men's and women's squads.

The job description changes with the title. A director of cricket owns recruitment and structure. A head coach owns the XI, the match plan and the result on the night.

Badani makes way

Badani took the head coach role in 2024, after Ricky Ponting left. Delhi finished sixth in IPL 2026, CricTracker reports, and missed the playoffs in both 2025 and 2026. The franchise has not said what happens to Badani next.

Delhi have never won the IPL. They reached their only final in 2020. Three head coaches have now held the job inside four seasons. That churn is the backdrop to Tuesday's announcement.

Three things still undisclosed

Tuesday's announcement left gaps that shape the next six months.

  • The length of Ganguly's contract, which the franchise did not disclose
  • Whether he keeps the director of cricket brief alongside the new job
  • The rest of the support staff for the 2027 season

Those answers feed into the auction. A head coach appointed this far out normally gets a say in retentions, and Delhi have reached the playoffs once in the last four seasons.

A second Capitals dugout

He has coached a franchise before. Ganguly was appointed head coach of Pretoria Capitals for the SA20 2026 season and has since talked publicly about that side's auction planning. The SA20 runs in January and February, outside the IPL window.

So the two jobs do not clash on the calendar. They do overlap in method. Both are short league seasons built around an auction and a small squad.

That gives him one league season of head coaching behind him. IPL 2027 will be the longer test. The season is bigger, the squad is bigger, and the scrutiny in India does not compare.
