Shubman Gill 223 Powers India's Record 406 Chase In Guwahati

Shubman Gill finished on 223 not out as India chased 406 to beat West Indies by eight wickets at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Wednesday. It is the highest successful run chase in India's one day international history. India reached 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs. Thirty nine balls were spare. India lead the series 2-0.

Gill faced 133 balls. He hit 26 fours and eight sixes. Rohit Sharma made 101 from 75 at the other end. Two Indian wickets fell in the whole chase. No India side had been set a target this large before, in any country, against any opponent.

Three centuries in the West Indies innings

John Campbell went first. He made 101 from 68 balls at the top of the order. Shai Hope followed with 104 from 94. Amir Jangoo struck 114 from 77 lower down. West Indies closed on 405 for 7 from their 50 overs, having batted first.

No West Indies side had passed 400 in a one day international before. All three hundreds came at better than a run a ball. The innings ran at better than eight an over from the first ball to the last. Barsapara offered a true surface and a short square boundary, and the tourists used both.

Hope captained the side and made the slowest of the three hundreds. He still scored at better than a run a ball. Campbell set the tone inside the powerplay and Jangoo finished the innings off. The two innings produced 811 runs between them. Then West Indies lost, inside 44 overs, with their attack wicketless for long stretches of the reply.

Gill's double century in 117 balls

Gill reached his hundred from 62 balls. That is the fastest by an India captain. His double followed in 117 deliveries, the quickest anyone has reached 200 in the format. He was unbeaten at the finish on 223. His strike rate finished above 167. Rohit Sharma, 101 from 75, struck at 134.

The arithmetic was brutal from the start. India needed 8.12 an over across 50. Gill answered at better than a run and a half a ball for most of his innings. Rohit Sharma's hundred came from 75 balls, and the two batted together through the middle of the chase. India got home with 39 balls unused.

Records that changed hands

Several marks moved in one evening. These are the ones that stood up by the close:

  • India's highest successful one day international run chase, 406 for 2
  • Fastest double century in one day international cricket, reached by Gill in 117 balls
  • Highest one day international score by an India captain
  • Third highest individual score in one day international cricket
  • Second batter after Rohit Sharma with more than one one day international double century
  • First West Indies total above 400 in the format

Gill is the second name on that double century list. Rohit Sharma, batting at the other end on Wednesday, was the first to get there more than once. Gill also captained the side, which is why two of the marks above are captaincy records rather than batting ones.

The series moves on with India 2-0 up

One match of the one day leg remains. India had already won the opener in Thiruvananthapuram, where Virat Kohli passed 15,000 runs in the format. That game was a chase as well. The series is settled at 2-0 and the tour then turns to a Twenty20 leg.

West Indies have conceded 400 and made 400 in the same week. Their bowlers have taken four wickets across the two completed chases. Hope now has a dead rubber and a short format series in which to find an answer, and the touring attack has not yet contained an India top order twice in a row. Four wickets in two matches is the number their selectors will look at first.

The timing suits India. The 2027 World Cup will be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, and Gill is leading a top order that has now chased in both matches of this series. Virat Kohli played in both. He has said that tournament will be his last for India.
