Sano To Host First India vs Japan T20I As Suzuki Cup Is Confirmed

The first India vs Japan T20I has been set for 22 September at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture. The match is called the Suzuki Cup. It marks 75 years of diplomatic relations, and it is the first T20I between the two countries.

The Japan Cricket Association is the host. For an Associate member, a one-off fixture against a Full Member is the rarest thing on the calendar. It is also usually the thing that pays for the next four years of development work.

The fixture and the venue

The match starts at 1pm local time. It is scheduled as a full T20 International. Sano is Japan's first purpose-built cricket venue, in Tochigi prefecture north of Tokyo, and it remains the country's primary dedicated ground. Before it opened, Japanese cricket shared its grounds with other sports. Tickets go through the JCA website.

"To be able to invite the reigning World Champions to the home of cricket in Japan is a landmark moment for our association," said JCA chief executive Naoki Miyaji.

The BCCI position

Devajit Saikia, the BCCI honorary secretary, framed the fixture as an expansion exercise rather than a friendly. "This is a significant moment for cricket, as it takes the Indian team to new territory and provides an opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia," he said at the announcement. The framing matters. Full Member sides rarely tour outside the Test-playing bloc, and when they do it is usually for a qualifying event.

Saikia returned to the theme on Monday. "India-Japan is more than a cricket match," he said.

A crowded few weeks in Japan

The Suzuki Cup does not sit alone. Japan also hosts the Asian Games cricket tournaments. That gives the country an unusually dense run of senior cricket:

• Asian Games men's tournament, 24 September to 3 October, Kōrogi Sports Park, Aichi

That is three separate senior events inside about a fortnight, in a country with a small playing population and a handful of turf grounds. The logistical load falls largely on the same association staff. Japan has a small playing base and few turf grounds. Three senior events inside a fortnight is a serious stretch for any Associate board.

The commercial backing

Suzuki Motor Corporation is the title partner and Mitsui Knowledge Industry is a major partner. The fixture sits under a wider "Sport 75" banner tied to the anniversary. Corporate backing of that scale is what makes a fixture like this viable for an Associate board, which cannot fund an India visit from gate receipts. The economics only work with a title partner.

Japan has held ICC Associate status since 2005 and has built its programme around Sano. One match will not change the playing numbers. A televised one against India, in September, might change who hears about the sport.
