Pakistan docked 11 WTC points and slip to last in the table

Pakistan have been docked 11 WTC points for a slow over-rate at Edgbaston. They were fined 50 percent of their match fee as well. The ICC confirmed both sanctions on Monday. Pakistan were ruled 11 overs short of the target once time allowances were applied. The deduction leaves them ninth of nine in the World Test Championship 2025-27 table, on 4.63 percent.

Match referee Ranjan Madugalle imposed the punishment. On-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney laid the charge. Third umpire Allahudien Palekar and fourth umpire Russell Warren joined it. Business Standard reported the offence under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Eleven overs short at Edgbaston

Edgbaston did not run its full course. England finished the chase on day four. Mohammad Abbas removed both England openers early that morning. Jordan Cox and Joe Root then saw out a target of 130 unbeaten. Root made his second fifty of the series. Eleven overs went missing from a match that ended with a day to spare.

Pakistan lost every Test of the tour. England took the series 3-0.

Five percent an over, up to a cap

The ICC scale is fixed. Teams are fined, in the ICC wording, "five per cent of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl within the allotted time". The maximum is "capped at 50 percent of the match fee". Eleven overs short computes to 55 percent. The cap held the fine at 50.

The points deduction carried no such ceiling. Eleven overs, 11 points. The fine was capped. The deduction was not.

The fall to 4.63 percent

The ICC listed Pakistan ninth on 14.81 percent in its table of 12 September. The sanction takes them to 4.63. That is a drop of more than 10 points of percentage without a ball being bowled. Their playing record has not moved. Nine Tests, two won, seven lost.

Australia lead the cycle on 80.00 percent from 10 matches. South Africa are second on 75.00 from four. New Zealand are third on 72.22 from six. Bangladesh sit fourth on 55.56 and India fifth on 51.52. Sri Lanka are seventh on 33.33. West Indies are eighth on 20.83 from 12 Tests.

England and the over-rate ledger

England won the series and still carry penalties of their own. The ICC review of the championship published on 12 September noted that England "have also been docked points for maintaining a slow over-rate in their clashes". No figure was attached to that line.

England have played 16 Tests in this cycle. No other side has played more than 12. They sit sixth on 38.54 percent.

Sri Lanka at Rawalpindi and Lahore in November

Pakistan return to championship cricket at home. They host Sri Lanka for two Tests in November. Rawalpindi and Lahore take one match each. Sri Lanka have played six Tests in the cycle and won one of them.

The same over-rate threshold applies at both grounds. Pakistan begin that series 11 points worse off than they ended the England tour.
