Ottneil Baartman ruled out of Australia ODIs as Duan Jansen joins squad

Ottneil Baartman has been ruled out of South Africa’s home one-day series against Australia with a left hamstring injury. Duan Jansen replaces him. The problem surfaced in the opening first-class match of the South African season. Baartman was playing for the Dolphins. He bowled five overs. He did not bat in the second innings. Cricket South Africa named Jansen, who had been with the national group in Namibia, as the replacement.

Five overs for the Dolphins

Cricket South Africa has not put a timeline on the recovery. Further medical assessment will settle how long Baartman is out. The board has ruled him out of the one-day series only. Nothing beyond that has been decided. The withdrawal comes eleven days before the first match in Durban.

Duan Jansen earns the call

Jansen was already inside the national set-up. He had travelled with the South African squad in Namibia. He was the leading wicket-taker at the recent Twenty20 tri-series there, with 11 wickets in four matches according to the ICC. He now joins his older brother Marco. Both are in the 16. Zimbabwe were the third side in that tri-series.

A second seamer already missing

Baartman is not the first quick unavailable here. Kagiso Rabada was already out with a hamstring concern of his own. Cricket South Africa has not published a return date for him. His availability for the three-Test series that follows on 9 October is still being assessed. Both injuries sit in the same muscle group.

The seam bowling now runs through Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Gerald Coetzee, Kwena Maphaka and Corbin Bosch. Duan Jansen is added to that group. Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin are the specialist spinners. Aiden Markram offers off-spin. That is a short list for three matches in seven days.
