Miller 142 As South Africa Seal ODI Series Against Australia

South Africa won the ODI series against Australia with a game to spare in Johannesburg on Sunday, David Miller making 142 from 93 balls in a total of 365 for nine. Australia were bowled out for 333. The margin was 32 runs and South Africa lead 2-0.
Temba Bavuma made 103. Jack Edwards took a maiden ODI five-wicket haul for the losing side. Keshav Maharaj finished with two for 54.
Miller's 142 turns the innings
Miller struck nine sixes. Reuters recorded the innings as his highest in ODI cricket. He came in with the innings already set and took South Africa past 350. A strike rate above 150 across 93 balls is what separated 365 from a more ordinary total.
Bavuma's hundred did the earlier work. The captain reached three figures and the pair between them accounted for 245 of the 365.
- David Miller 142 off 93 balls, including nine sixes
- Temba Bavuma 103
- Jack Edwards, a maiden ODI five-wicket haul
- Keshav Maharaj two for 54
- South Africa 365 for nine, Australia 333
Edwards takes five in defeat
Edwards had played only a handful of ODIs before this one. Reuters put his figures at five for 67 from ten overs. It was the standout return of the match. It also came in a losing cause.
CricTracker reported it as the first five-wicket haul of his List A career, taken in only his second ODI. Five of the nine South African wickets to fall were his. The other four were shared around.
Australia fall 32 short
Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head both made half-centuries. Accounts of the innings differ on their exact scores, so Crickslab is not carrying a figure for either. Reuters also credited Xavier Bartlett with 50 from 28 balls late on.
Bavuma pointed to the surface afterwards. "Another good all-round team performance. Unbelievable innings by David and then the bowlers as well…there was a lot more spin than was expected. The way the spin complemented our attack it was great," he said, in comments reported by the Associated Press.

Marsh on a second defeat
Australia have now lost the series with a match still to play. "Really disappointing. Fair play to South Africa. I thought they played really well, outplayed us again. We haven't been able to execute in those middle phases which is a great learning curve for our players," Marsh said, again as reported by the Associated Press.
The third match is a dead rubber for the series but not for selection. South Africa have now beaten Australia in consecutive games on this tour, having won the opener in Durban by 67 runs. Bavuma has a hundred. Miller has a career-best. And by the captain's own account the pitch turned more than either side expected.
