Langer rejects the pitch excuse for two-day Test matches

Justin Langer has called two-day Test matches "unacceptable" and refused to blame the pitches for them. He spoke to SEN Radio on Sunday. Australia had just beaten Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs inside two days at Mackay. Three of Australia's last seven Tests have now finished in two days.

"Two-day Test matches (are) unacceptable," Langer said. "It's no good for the game for so many reasons." He then set out his reasons. None of them was about the surface.

The excuse Langer will not accept

"And you know we're talking about very well-paid professionals now, and you get tired of hearing 'Oh it's just the pitches, oh it's the curators, it's the ball moves a bit'," he said.

His diagnosis was technical. "I think a lot of it is down to basic batting technique," Langer said. "Almost every dismissal has been batters; their front foot has not gone past the front line." Young players aiming at Test cricket are surprised when he teaches them the basics, he added.

Curators have carried much of the blame for short Tests. Pitch and outfield ratings sit with the ICC match referee. Demerit points attach to the venue. Neither team carries them. Langer is arguing that the ratings machinery is being asked to explain something it did not cause.

Who loses when a Test ends early

Langer named the parties who pay for a two-day finish:

• Crowds who bought tickets for days three, four and five
• Children watching on television or listening on radio
• Cricket Australia, which he called the economic loser
• Grassroots cricket, which is funded from that revenue

"Last year was disappointing for the crowds, for the kids who get to watch their heroes on TV or listen on the radio or get to the ground," he said. "Economically it's a disaster for Cricket Australia who put money into grassroots cricket."

Behind the Mackay numbers

Bangladesh were bowled out for 64 and 95. Australia made 210 in between. Mitchell Starc took ten wickets in the match. Shoriful Islam took seven in one innings. Thirty wickets fell for 369 runs across two days.

The result levelled the series at 1-1. Bangladesh had won the first Test in Darwin. It was their first Test win in Australia. Both matches counted towards the 2025-27 World Test Championship. Both were over well before the fifth day.

The scheduling arithmetic for boards

A Test is sold as a five-day product. Gate receipts, hospitality, catering, casual staffing and broadcast inventory are all priced against that. A two-day finish removes three of those days. The venue has already paid to prepare for five.

Mackay's Great Barrier Reef Arena was hosting its first Test. It became Australia's twelfth Test venue on Saturday. The ground staff were packing up on Sunday. Venues bidding for Test cricket carry that risk on their own books.
