Jordan Hermann 150 On ODI Debut Equals World Record In Windhoek

Jordan Hermann scored 150 on ODI debut at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek on 9 September, equalling the world record for the highest score by a debutant. The South Africa opener faced 126 balls. He hit 17 fours and three sixes. South Africa posted 348 for 6 and won by 99 runs on the Duckworth Lewis Stern method after rain twice interrupted the reply.

The record he matched belongs to a teammate. Matthew Breetzke made 150 on his own ODI debut against New Zealand in February 2025. South Africa now hold the top two places on that list. Hermann fell one run short of taking it outright.

Inside the 126-ball innings

Hermann needed 61 balls for his first fifty. The next fifty took 32. He reached three figures from 93 deliveries, then went from 100 to 150 in another 32 balls. Ruben Trumpelmann dismissed him on the following delivery. His second wicket stand with Tony de Zorzi was worth 190. De Zorzi made 72 from 84 balls.

De Zorzi was out before him. Hermann then added 59 with Dewald Brevis, who made 33 from 28 balls. Corbin Bosch finished on 39 not out from 24, with three sixes. South Africa closed on 348 for 6 and scored at just under seven an over across the innings.

Hermann was clear afterwards about the intent. "I've been taught my whole life that you don't just get a hundred, you try to push it further and further...I didn't want to give Namibia a sniff because they're a good team," he said.

The debut list Hermann joins

Desmond Haynes held this record for close to five decades. The West Indies opener made 148 in 1978. Breetzke passed him last year. Hermann has now drawn level.

Namibia's chase ends in the rain

Namibia reached 162 for 8 before the match was called. Prenelan Subrayen took 4 for 29. Rain interrupted the chase twice. The 99 run margin was settled on Duckworth Lewis Stern.

The chase was over long before the weather settled it. Namibia had conceded 348 and then lost eight wickets against a full strength South Africa attack. Subrayen did the damage through the middle overs. The two sides meet again at the same ground.

Windhoek's World Cup audition

South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will co-host the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 2027. It will be the first World Cup staged in Africa since 2003. Windhoek is among the grounds working towards that tournament. CricTracker and Dawn both report this as the first men's ODI between the two neighbours.

Two further ODIs complete the series, with the second at the same ground.
