Henriques Ton Sets Up Portugal vs Spain Qualifier C Final

Moises Henriques hit 111 from 51 balls in Vantaa on Thursday, and Portugal beat Czechia by 91 runs on DLS to reach the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C. Spain are waiting. The two meet in Finland on Friday for the one place the tournament awards.

Portugal made 211 for 6 at the Tikkurila Cricket Ground. Rain closed out Czechia's reply on 24 for 5 from 8.5 overs, well adrift of the DLS par score. It was a fourth straight win for Portugal and it sealed Group B ahead of Czechia, Germany, Greece and Israel. Spain came through Group A with four wins of their own. The ICC recorded the innings as Henriques' first century in a T20 international.

Friday's final and the road to 2028

Qualifier C is the last of three European sub-regional events in this cycle, following tournaments in Cyprus and Denmark. The ICC has confirmed that the winner in Finland advances to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier in 2027. That event feeds the Global Qualifier. The Global Qualifier feeds the 2028 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, co-hosted by Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket.

Only the winner carries on. The loser leaves the 2028 cycle after eight days of cricket in Finland. Reports before the tournament indicated that Scotland, Jersey and Denmark are among the teams already waiting at the 2027 Europe Qualifier, with the top two from that event progressing to the Global Qualifier, according to ANI.

Henriques and Portugal's heritage squad

Henriques, 39, was born in Funchal, Madeira, and moved to Australia as a child. He played four Tests, 16 ODIs and 24 T20Is for Australia, the last of them in 2021. He was the first Portugal-born cricketer to represent Australia. His birthplace makes him eligible for Portugal. He took the captaincy from Carlos Nunes for this tournament.

The squad also includes Craig Cachopa, the former Sussex and Auckland wicketkeeper, and Cameron Shekleton, who has represented South Africa A, according to ANI. Italy came the same way. They qualified for the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup through the 2025 Europe Qualifier with a side built substantially on players of Italian ancestry.

Henriques was asked about that before the Finland tournament began. "Obviously, the ideal, the nirvana, would be to replicate what Italy have done," he told the ICC. He added: "Whether that's realistic for this World Cup, or the following, I don't know." Three sub-regional tournaments have been staged this month, in Cyprus, Denmark and Finland.

The final in numbers

Both finalists arrive unbeaten, from opposite groups, having never faced each other at the event. Portugal have the tournament's outstanding individual performer. Spain have won four matches without needing one.
