Hayley Matthews 182 Breaks West Indies Women's ODI Record

Hayley Matthews made 182 from 156 balls at Harare Sports Club on Thursday, the highest score by a West Indies woman in a one-day international. West Indies won the first ODI against Zimbabwe by 99 runs. The tourists made 299 for 6 from their 50 overs. Zimbabwe were bowled out for 200 in 43.3 overs.

Matthews opened the batting. She hit 26 fours and two sixes. Her first wicket stand with Realeanna Grimmond was worth 128 from 140 balls, and Grimmond made 53. The ICC rates the innings the sixth highest in women's ODI history and the fourth best by a captain.

Matthews clears Taylor's 171

The previous West Indies mark had stood since the 2013 World Cup. Stafanie Taylor made 171 against Sri Lanka at the Middle Income Group Ground in Mumbai on 3 February that year. Matthews passed it by 11 runs. Taylor was playing at a World Cup. Matthews was playing a bilateral series in Harare.

Boundary counts vary between scorecards. Sky Sports and CricTracker both record 26 fours, while the ICC match report gives 28. The 182 itself is not in dispute, and neither is the ball count of 156.

Mupachikwa alone in the Zimbabwe chase

Zimbabwe needed 300 and never threatened it. Modester Mupachikwa made 86. Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano added 26 and Sharne Mayers 21. The innings finished in the 44th over. Aaliyah Alleyne took 3 for 44 and three other bowlers took two wickets each.

Zimbabwe's bowlers had little answer. Francisca Chipare sent down her full ten overs and took 2 for 57, the best figures of the innings for the hosts. Tendai Makusha and Beloved Biza took one apiece, at a cost of 57 and 51.

The West Indies attack shared the work evenly:

Zimbabwe's first championship cycle

These three ODIs count towards the ICC Women's Championship. The 2025 to 2029 edition runs with 11 teams, up from 10, and Zimbabwe are the addition. Each side plays eight of the other ten in three match series. A win is worth two points. A tie, a no result or an abandonment is worth one.

The top seven, plus the host, go straight into the 2029 Women's World Cup. The other three drop into a qualifier. In all the cycle carries 44 series and 132 ODIs. Every one of them counts.

West Indies arrived in good order. They beat Ireland 3-0 in a recent championship series. Josephine Nkomo captains Zimbabwe here, leading a 16 player squad named on 23 September. The rest of the tour runs on:
