Hardik Pandya Ruled Out With Right Tibial Bone Stress Response

Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the India A one day series against Australia A. He has been diagnosed with a symptomatic right tibial bone stress response. The all rounder has been ordered to rest completely for two weeks by the medical team at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Cricbuzz reported the diagnosis on Saturday. Indian outlets confirmed it on Sunday morning.

No structural bone damage was found. No established stress fracture was found either. A stress response is the stage before a fracture, where the bone is reacting to load without having cracked. That distinction shapes the treatment. It is why the prescription is rest rather than surgery.

The diagnosis and the recovery band

Injuries of this type usually need four to six weeks to settle fully, according to CricTracker. The two week rest order is the first part of that. It is not the whole of it. Pandya will be reassessed before any return to bowling load, and bowling is the part that loads a shin hardest.

Puducherry comes off the calendar

The India A series runs on 6, 9 and 11 October in Puducherry. Pandya was picked for all three matches. He misses the lot.

  • 6, 9 and 11 October: India A v Australia A one day matches, Puducherry. Ruled out.
  • 22 October to 1 November: India in New Zealand, Twenty20 international leg. Doubtful.
  • 4 to 15 November: India in New Zealand, one day international leg.

New Zealand sits on the margin

The Twenty20 leg starts on 22 October. Counted from the start of the rest period, that lands at the outer edge of a four to six week recovery. It does not sit safely beyond it. The one day leg from 4 November gives more room.

Neither leg is settled until he is reassessed. A bowling all rounder also needs more than clearance to bat. He needs enough loading to get through ten overs across a match week without the shin flaring again.

A thin year of cricket

Pandya has played very little since the spring. His last competitive cricket was the 2026 Indian Premier League. He appeared in 10 of 14 matches there. His last Twenty20 international was the World Cup final in March 2026. His last one day international was the Champions Trophy final in March 2025.

That gap is the part India will worry about. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has said game time before the 2027 World Cup would be "extremely, extremely important" for him. The India A series was meant to provide some of it. The window to find replacement overs is now shorter than it was on Friday.
