England Women v Ireland ODI Series: Dean Captains At Leicester

The England Women v Ireland ODI series starts at Leicester on Tuesday, three matches across six days, with ICC Women's Championship points on offer in each one. Charlie Dean captains a 15-player England squad. Gaby Lewis leads a 14-player Ireland side still waiting on its first point of this Championship cycle.

Ireland go in ninth of the 11 teams, according to the ICC. Their only Championship matches so far came in July, when West Indies won 3-0 at Bready. England were seventh. That table gave them three points from three.

England leave out five seniors

England are without Nat Sciver-Brunt, Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Amy Jones, Sophie Ecclestone and Lauren Bell. The ECB said Sciver-Brunt and Wyatt-Hodge are being managed for fitness and recovery. Jones has been rested. Dean, the Somerset off-spinner, takes the captaincy.

Grace Potts and Kira Chathli are uncapped. Charis Pavely has two IT20s behind her and no ODI cap yet. Ryana MacDonald-Gay is back from a lower back injury. Tilly Corteen-Coleman has played twice. Eight of the 15 were at the T20 World Cup. England finished runners-up to Australia there.

Charlotte Edwards, the head coach, called the series "an opportunity for some of them to push themselves further forward".

Ireland arrive without a point

West Indies swept the July series at Bready. Stafanie Taylor made her 10th ODI century in the third match, which West Indies won by 64 runs. Hayley Matthews was player of the series with 265 runs and seven wickets, Wisden reported.

June went better. Ireland beat West Indies at Bristol for their first win in a Women's T20 World Cup match.

Lewis said: "Confidence is high after the last few months - we got our first win against West Indies in the T20 World Cup, but we were gutted to not get a win against the West Indies in that ODI series."

Lauren Rowles, Ireland's national women's selector, said there is "real competition for places and exciting talent emerging through the pipeline".

Three grounds in six days

Leicester has the opener at 1pm on Tuesday. Derby follows on Thursday at the same time. The series closes at New Road, Worcester, on Sunday 6 September, starting at 10.30am.

The Championship table

Eleven teams contest the 2025-29 ICC Women's Championship. It decides qualification for the 2029 Women's Cricket World Cup.

New Zealand led the standings published in July on 13 points from nine matches. Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies came next on eight. Australia and South Africa had six. England were seventh, Ireland ninth, Zimbabwe tenth on nought from six.
