England Take Sri Lanka ODI Series 2-1 With 223-Run Win At The Oval

England took the Sri Lanka ODI series 2-1 with a 223-run win at the Kia Oval. They bowled the tourists out for 132. Tom Banton had already made his first one-day international century by then. England posted 355 for 7. Sri Lanka never got near it. The decider was played on Sunday, 27 September.
Sri Lanka had levelled the series at Headingley four days earlier. Nothing carried over. Harry Brook's side batted first, scored at better than seven an over, and then bowled Sri Lanka out. Liam Dawson and Gus Atkinson took five wickets between them.
England reach 355 for 7
England scored at just over seven an over for fifty. Banton made 126 from 105 balls with 16 fours and five sixes. Brook added 77 from 66. Jordan Cox hit 76 from 52, the quickest of the three innings by strike rate, and it was his runs that carried the total past 350 late on.
Reports of Sri Lanka's best bowling figures differ between outlets, so they are left out here. The leading figures on both sides are set out below.
- Tom Banton 126 from 105 balls, 16 fours and five sixes
- Harry Brook 77 from 66 balls
- Jordan Cox 76 from 52 balls
- Liam Dawson 3 for 26
- Kusal Mendis 35 from 26 balls, Sri Lanka's top score

Banton's first ODI hundred
It was Banton's maiden century in the format. He has moved in and out of England's white-ball sides for several years, and the Oval innings was his highest one-day international score. Sky Sports named him player of the match. He faced 105 balls for it, which is a slower tempo than the reputation that follows him.
Sri Lanka fold in the chase
The chase never started properly. Kusal Mendis made 35 from 26 and was the only batter to pass 30. Liam Dawson's left-arm spin brought 3 for 26. Gus Atkinson took two wickets. Sonny Baker picked up his first in one-day internationals.
Sri Lanka were bowled out for 132. That is 190 fewer than the 322 they defended at Headingley four days earlier to level the series. The gap between those two batting performances is the series in one line.
Brook called the display "a near-perfect performance", according to Sky Sports.
Jacks takes the series award
Cricket Times reported that Will Jacks was named player of the series after scoring 147 runs and taking nine wickets across the three matches. That is an all-round return from a player who was not the headline name in either squad. Sri Lanka leave England having won one of the three one-day internationals. That was the Headingley match, by 16 runs, defending 322. The Oval was the opposite kind of afternoon.
