Durban Test: Australia Win By 214 Runs As Hazlewood Takes 6 For 49

Australia won the Durban Test by 214 runs on Tuesday. They bowled South Africa out for 206 at Kingsmead to lead the three match series 1-0. Josh Hazlewood took 6 for 49, the best figures of his Test career. South Africa had been set 421.
Matt Renshaw was named player of the match. He made 190 in the first innings and 82 in the second. South Africa began the final day needing 319 more runs. They were bowled out inside the day.
Hazlewood's best figures in a Test
Hazlewood's 6 for 49 came in the fourth innings. Aiden Markram top scored in the chase with 75. Wiaan Mulder made 29. No other South African reached 50.
The end was abrupt. South Africa lost their last four wickets for five runs, according to ABC News, which also credited Renshaw with 2 for 30. Mitchell Starc dismissed Markram. Nathan Lyon held a catch at short cover to remove Anrich Nortje, Tribune India reported.
Renshaw scores 190 and 82
Renshaw's 190 took Australia to 390. His 82 in the second innings then let them declare on 314 for 6 with time left to bowl. The two innings came to 272 runs. No other batter on either side passed 100 in the match.
South Africa's reply of 284 left them 106 behind on first innings. They never recovered that margin. Australia made 704 runs across their two innings to South Africa's 490.
Four innings at Kingsmead
- Australia first innings: 390
- South Africa first innings: 284
- Australia second innings: 314 for 6 declared
- South Africa second innings: 206, chasing 421
Australia's grip on the championship table
The result moved the World Test Championship table. South Africa drop to third and New Zealand rise to second, outside and inside the two places that reach the final. The top five now read:
- Australia: 81.82 percent from 11 matches, nine wins
- New Zealand: 72.22 percent from six matches
- South Africa: 60.00 percent from five matches
- Bangladesh: 55.56 percent from six matches
- India: 51.52 percent from 11 matches
South Africa have played fewer matches than anyone else in that group. That cuts both ways. Each result still swings their percentage hard, so two wins in this series would restore them quickly, and two defeats would not.
Gqeberha on 18 October
The second Test starts in Gqeberha on 18 October and the third is in Cape Town from 27 October, according to Tribune India. Five days separate the teams from the next toss. South Africa passed 300 in neither innings at Kingsmead. Australia took all 20 wickets inside five days. Hazlewood and Starc shared the new ball throughout. Markram's 75 was the only South African score above 50 in the fourth innings, and the top order will face the same attack again next week.
