Dhruv Jurel Century Lifts India to 503 for 9 Declared in Colombo

A Dhruv Jurel century lifted India to 503 for 9 declared on the second day of the Colombo Test. Sri Lanka closed on 8 for 2 in reply. Jurel finished unbeaten on 115 from 177 balls. It was his second Test hundred. Rain wiped out more than two hours of the afternoon at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

India resumed on 300 for 5, built on Devdutt Padikkal's 117 from the opening day. Debutant Saransh Jain fell inside the first hour, with only seven runs added. Shubman Gill declared in fading evening light once the total passed 500. Sri Lanka trail by 495 with eight first-innings wickets standing.

Jurel and Pant rebuild after Jain falls

Rishabh Pant walked in at 307 for 6. He and Jurel then batted through a watchful first session without being parted, adding 112 for the seventh wicket and taking India to 419 for 6 at lunch. Pant made 63 from 89 balls.

He fell to the first ball after the resumption, caught by Lahiru Udara off Keshara Nuwantha. Manav Suthar came in and put on 54 with Jurel for the eighth wicket before edging behind for 18. Mohammed Siraj then dug in to keep the strike away from himself.

Rain takes out the afternoon

India were 475 for 8 when the weather arrived. Jurel was on 95. Heavy rain forced an early tea and cost more than two hours of playing time, with further showers following before the evening session began.

The break did not unsettle him. Jurel spent 22 deliveries stuck on 99 before working a single to mid-off to reach three figures. His innings contained nine fours and two sixes.

India's last four wickets add 84

The tail did the damage. From 419 for 6 at lunch, India put on another 84 runs for the loss of three wickets, and Jurel took 20 of them after reaching 95. Siraj went shortly after the hundred came up. Last man Prasidh Krishna drove a low full toss from Asitha Fernando through covers to carry the total past 500, and the declaration came immediately.

Two down before the close

Gill's timing was rewarded. With the new ball and the light going, India struck twice in the short window that remained. Prasidh Krishna had Udara caught for 1, Yashasvi Jaiswal taking a diving catch at third slip. Suthar then trapped nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya lbw for 2 off the final delivery of the day. Kamil Mishara was unbeaten on 5.

Fernando's second long day

Asitha Fernando was again the pick of the Sri Lanka attack across 138 overs of Indian batting. The seamer took four wickets for the second day running. Sri Lanka's returns read:

• Keshara Nuwantha: 2 wickets

Jayasuriya bowled the bulk of the spin and conceded the most runs of any bowler. Sri Lanka now bat twice, on a surface that has given the seamers something for two days, with three days left in the match.
