Chinmay Sutar Makes 400 Not Out As Mizoram Declare On 581

Chinmay Sutar made 400 not out for Mizoram against Nagaland at Sovima, becoming only the second batter to reach 400 in a Ranji Trophy innings. He faced 517 balls. Mizoram declared on 581 for 9 on the second day of the Plate group fixture. Nagaland closed on 50 for 1 in reply.
It was Sutar's second first-class match. He hit 46 fours and seven sixes. Cricket Times reported that he was 392 not out at tea and reached the mark during the 155th over of the innings. The previous highest score in the competition since independence belonged to Prithvi Shaw, who made 379 for Mumbai in 2022-23.
The innings in numbers
Sutar batted for the better part of two days. His strike rate sat a shade under 78. Forty-six fours and seven sixes account for 226 of his runs. He ran the other 174. That split is unusual at this length. Long scores in Indian domestic cricket are more often built on placement through a tiring field.

Nimbalkar's 443 still stands
The Ranji Trophy record is older than the republic. B B Nimbalkar made 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49, an innings that ended when the opposition conceded the match rather than bowl on. Sutar now sits second on that list, 43 runs short.
- B B Nimbalkar, 443 not out, Maharashtra v Kathiawar, 1948-49
- Chinmay Sutar, 400 not out, Mizoram v Nagaland, 2026-27
- Prithvi Shaw, 379, Mumbai v Assam, 2022-23
Outlook India reported that the innings was the 10th of 400 or more in all first-class cricket. Brian Lara holds the record there with 501 not out for Warwickshire in 1994.
A last-wicket stand of 190
Sutar's partner for the closing passage was Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak. The pair added an unbeaten 190 for the 10th wicket before Mizoram declared. Cricket Times called it the third highest last-wicket stand in Ranji Trophy history. Nine wickets had already fallen when it began. The declaration came with the pair still together.
Mizoram in the Plate group
Mizoram play in the Plate group, the tier that holds India's smaller state associations. The side was admitted to the Ranji Trophy in 2018-19, when the Board brought in the North East units along with Bihar and Uttarakhand. Totals of this size are rare for them. The declaration left Nagaland two and a half days to bat out. They reached stumps on the second evening one wicket down.
The Plate group runs on a separate ladder from the Elite groups, with promotion at the end of the season. Pitches in the group have a reputation for flattening out, and scores of 500 are not unknown. An individual 400 is another matter. Sutar had played one first-class match before this one.
Round two runs through Wednesday. Haryana have already taken the first outright result of the round, beating Chandigarh by an innings and 24 runs at Lahli.
