China out of Asian Games women's cricket without a ball bowled

China's Asian Games women's cricket campaign ended on Thursday without a single delivery being bowled. Rain at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, on the outskirts of Nagoya, washed out their quarter-final against Bangladesh. There was no toss. Bangladesh advanced to the semi-finals on ranking alone.

It was the opening day of the eight-team knockout competition. The tournament runs until 22 September. Bangladesh will meet the winner of India against Japan in the last four on 20 September. China, who have no men's team at these Games, are finished in Nagoya after three appearances in the sport since 2010.

No toss, no play at Korogi Sports Park

Persistent rain and a wet outfield kept the covers on all morning. The umpires never called the captains out. No coin was tossed, which is rare even for an abandoned fixture, and the match was written off before either side could put a team sheet into play.

Conditions had been flagged in advance. Business Standard reported AccuWeather afternoon rain probabilities of between 43 and 68 per cent at the venue for Thursday. The second quarter-final of the day, Pakistan against Thailand, was scheduled at the same ground. No confirmed result for that match was available at the time of writing.

The ranking clause in the playing conditions

A straight knockout with no reserve day needs a tie-break when the weather takes over. Business Standard cites Rule 16.10.2(b) of the Asian Games cricket playing conditions, under which the higher-ranked team advances from a washed-out match. Bangladesh sit eighth in the ICC women's T20I team rankings. China sit 36th. That gap decided the tie.

The regulation is not unusual in multi-sport events, where venue availability is fixed and the cricket has to fit a wider Games schedule. It does mean a lower-ranked side can be knocked out on a table position rather than a result. For the associate and emerging teams who use these Games as their rare window against Full Member opposition, that is the trade-off built into the format.

  • Bangladesh v China, 17 September, abandoned without a toss
  • Pakistan v Thailand, 17 September
  • Malaysia v Sri Lanka, 18 September
  • India v Japan, 18 September

Hangzhou set this precedent in 2023

The same mechanism decided two quarter-finals at the last Games. Rain on 21 September 2023 in Hangzhou ended India's match against Malaysia after India had reached 173 for 2 in 15 overs and Malaysia had faced two balls. Pakistan's quarter-final against Indonesia produced no play at all, the covers never coming off. Both India and Pakistan went through on world ranking.

So China's exit is not a first. Indonesia left the 2023 tournament the same way, beaten by the weather and a ranking table. What has changed is the setting: a purpose-built Japanese venue rather than a Chinese one, and a tournament in which the host nation has a team in both draws.

The bracket Bangladesh now face

Semi-finals are set for 20 September, with the gold and bronze medal matches on 22 September. India, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur with Smriti Mandhana as vice-captain, defend the title they won in Hangzhou. Nigar Sultana leads Bangladesh. Chamari Athapaththu captains Sri Lanka and Fatima Sana captains Pakistan.

All matches are at the Nisshin ground in Korogi Sports Park, which has a hybrid pitch and temporary stands for roughly 2,000 spectators. Japan Cricket Association chief executive Naoki Alex Miyaji told the ICC it is "the first time that we're going to have some Full Members come here and play cricket". The men's tournament, a ten-team event, starts on 24 September and finishes on 3 October.
