Carson Returns As Brownlie Names First White Ferns Squad

New Zealand have named a 15 player White Ferns squad for three T20Is in Australia, recalling Eden Carson, Molly Penfold, Hannah Rowe and Bella James. Melie Kerr captains. The series opens on 18 October. All three matches are at North Sydney Oval. It is Dean Brownlie's first squad. He took interim charge after Ben Sawyer left the role.

Carson has been out since December. Elbow surgery kept her away. Her recall puts a frontline off spinner back alongside Nensi Patel, Flora Devonshire and Kerr. Penfold and Rowe rejoin a seam attack that has lost Lea Tahuhu to retirement. James adds batting cover with Suzie Bates also gone.

Four names come back

Brownlie leaned on the returning players when the squad was released. "We're excited to welcome back Eden, Hannah, Molly, and Bella. There's a balance of experience and future-focus in this squad and it's going to be a chance for the group to test themselves against a quality side," he said.

Carson framed her return around patience. "To be back in the WHITE FERNS environment is really special. The rehab process has taken a lot of patience, but I've been fortunate to have great support around me and I'm feeling ready to get back out there and contribute," she said.

  • Melie Kerr (captain), Wellington
  • Eden Carson, Otago
  • Flora Devonshire, Central Districts
  • Maddy Green, Auckland
  • Brooke Halliday, Auckland
  • Bree Illing, Auckland
  • Polly Inglis, Otago
  • Bella James, Otago
  • Jess Kerr, Wellington
  • Rosemary Mair, Central Districts
  • Nensi Patel, Northern Districts
  • Molly Penfold, Auckland
  • Georgia Plimmer, Wellington
  • Hannah Rowe, Central Districts
  • Izzy Sharp, Canterbury

Gaze unavailable, Inglis takes the gloves

Izzy Gaze misses the tour. She has had surgery on a thumb injury. New Zealand Cricket expects her back early in 2027. Polly Inglis takes the gloves.

That is a real workload. Three T20Is land inside five days. All of them are on the same ground. Inglis keeps for Otago and now takes the role for a full series away from home.

Brownlie steps up after Sawyer

Brownlie has been the White Ferns batting coach for close to four years. He moves into the head coach job on an interim basis. Sawyer has stepped down. The Australia tour is Brownlie's first assignment in the role.

Four recalls in a 15 player group is heavy turnover for a three match series. Two of them are seamers. Penfold and Rowe fill that gap. The other two cover spin and the middle order.

Three matches at North Sydney Oval

  • Warm up against a Governor-General's XI, 15 October
  • First T20I, 18 October
  • Second T20I, 20 October
  • Third T20I, 22 October

The three T20Is are all at North Sydney Oval. A Governor-General's XI comes first. That warm up is three days before the series begins.

February in India is the target

The next ICC women's event is the inaugural Women's Champions Trophy. The ICC has set it for 14 to 28 February 2027 in India. Matches go to the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium. Six teams qualified through the ICC Women's T20I Team Rankings at a 6 July cut off. New Zealand are one of them.

That leaves about four months. Bates will not be in the batting order. Tahuhu will not be in the seam attack. The Australia series is the first look at the replacements.
