BCCI And Cricket Australia Exchange Umpires Across Five Matches

The BCCI Cricket Australia umpire exchange has put an Australian official in the Ranji Trophy and an Indian official in the Sheffield Shield. Cricket Australia announced the programme on 20 October. Five matches are covered. Ben Treloar takes two in India. Parashar Joshi takes three in Australia.

Two Ranji matches for Treloar

Treloar is already at work. He was appointed to Delhi against Gujarat in Delhi from 18 to 21 October. That is a round-two fixture, and it began two days before the announcement reached the public. His second game is Mumbai against Haryana, in Mumbai, from 26 to 29 October. Both are four-day fixtures.

Each board named one official. The arrangement covers first-class and one-day cricket in both countries. Joshi's block falls in November. All three of his fixtures are in Queensland or New South Wales.

  • Queensland v Tasmania, Sheffield Shield, the Gabba, 11 to 14 November
  • Queensland v Tasmania, One Day Cup, the Gabba, 16 November
  • New South Wales v Queensland, Sheffield Shield, the SCG, 22 to 25 November

Match counts behind the two appointments

Neither umpire is a novice. Treloar has stood in 30 first-class matches, 20 List A games and 39 Big Bash League fixtures. He has also done two women's ODIs and four women's T20Is. He works as Cricket New South Wales' Umpire Education Officer. Cricket Australia's announcement credits him with four George Borwick Memorial Awards from the state umpires and scorers association.

Joshi's record runs to 19 first-class matches across the Ranji and Duleep Trophies. He has 32 List A games in the Vijay Hazare and Deodhar Trophies. He has 40 T20 fixtures, including Indian Premier League and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy appointments.

Where the fixtures sit in each season

Treloar's two assignments bracket the early weeks of the Ranji Trophy. Round two opened on 18 October. That is the round in which Mizoram's Chinmay Sutar made 400 not out against Nagaland. The Mumbai fixture on 26 October falls in the following round.

The two Gabba appointments sit two days apart. Joshi stands in the Shield match from 11 to 14 November, then the One Day Cup fixture on 16 November. Both are Queensland against Tasmania. He moves to Sydney the following week for New South Wales against Queensland. The exchange as a whole runs from 18 October to 25 November, a window of 39 days.

Joshi lands in Australia mid-season. His three appointments cover red-ball and white-ball cricket inside a fortnight. ETV Bharat reports that the BCCI has run comparable arrangements with the England and Wales Cricket Board and Cricket South Africa, citing Adrian Holdstock and Rob Bailey officiating Ranji Trophy knockout matches in 2013.
